Aartje (Anne) Beelen (nee van Reenen)

Aartje (Anne) Beelen (nee van Reenen) passed away peacefully with family by her side at the Seven Oaks General Hospital in Winnipeg on April 10, 2023 at the age of 90. Aartje was born in the town of Brunssum, South Limburg (Zuid-Limburg) in the Netherlands. At the age of 25 she immigrated to Canada with her husband, Leonardus (Lei) and their son, Leonardus (Leo), crossing the Atlantic Ocean aboard the steamship the Groote Beer. They settled on a farm south of Winnipeg.

Aartje had a zest for life and “family” was “everything” to her. She was thoughtful and caring, and simultaneously strong-willed and independent. She was full of energy and stamina, until her health issues stole that from her. She loved music, especially Dutch and German songs. When still physically able she enjoyed knitting, reading, and window shopping which usually included a stop for coffee and a snack.

Aartje worked for many years with developmentally delayed children at the St. Amant Centre in Winnipeg. She viewed this as much more than a job, putting all her time and energy into supporting and expanding the lives of the children she interacted with.

She is survived by her son Leo and grandchildren Richard, Gina, Tyler and Chantelle; daughter Yvonne (Barry) and grandchild Amber (Darryl) with great grandchildren Keenan (Diana), Ethan and Brooke; son Gerry (Brian); son Robert (Leona); brother Ger; and numerous nieces and nephews. Aartje was predeceased by her husband Leonardus; her daughter Anita (1955); parents Anna and Gerhard van Reenen; brother Ruurd; sister Trientje; sister Annie; sister Mientje; and daughter-in-law Judy Beelen.

Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
