Angele DePape
November 29, 1929 – July 15, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Angele DePape (nee Haegeman, after a short illness, at the age of 94. Angele was predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Judith Haegeman, brothers Marcel (Mickey) and John, sister Estella (Stella), and her loving husband Gerard (Gerry). She will be especially missed and fondly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law Sister Mary DePape and Claudette Haegeman, and life-long friends Marcel and Alma Verdonck.
Born on the family farm at Bruxelles, MB, Angele stayed close to her farm and rural roots. After marrying Gerry, they ran the DePape family farm for many years, raising Belgian horses, showing them and competing at local fairs, before moving into Winnipeg in the late 1950’s.
At seventeen, Angele caught pneumonia and her doctor’s orders were to spend some time in a warmer climate. Her parents sent Angele along with her brother Marcel to spend time with her aunt and uncle in Los Angeles. The four months they spent in California in those formative years remained a fond memory for Angele, contributing to her world views as an adult.
Angele enjoyed sports, both participating and as a spectator. As an avid golfer, she won the Women’s Club Championship at Assiniboine Golf Club, where she and Gerry played for years. Her other sport interest was curling; she and Gerry were avid spectators of competitive curling, from the provincial playdowns, the Brier, the World’s and the Scotties. She would have an opinion on every player and every game.
Angele enjoyed knitting and spent hours with her knitting club knitting scarfs, mitts and hats with proceeds going to cancer care.
Angele was also a great painter and would paint chickadee’s and other birds on wooden slabs made of Balsam Poplar.
Angele loved travelling with Gerry, either by themselves or with family and friends, travelling throughout Europe, Canada and the U.S., as well as Cuba and Mexico.
Angele loved her family and friends, always keeping in touch, always sending birthday and Christmas cards, never failing to return a letter or card. She will be missed by many.
Cremation with a celebration of life at a later date.
