Peacefully, on Monday, December 13, 2021, Brian passed away at the Grace Hospital. at the age of 86. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine (Gerri); son Peter (Kelly) Garagan; daughters Colleen Shier and Kelly Anderson; grandchildren Kendra and Kiera Garagan; Kevin, Jack and Katie Shier; Matthew and Jake Anderson as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Brian is predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Louise Garagan; brothers Edward, Joseph, Patrick, Terence, Dennis, Tim, Leo, Lawrence, Sean, Mike and Peter.
Brian was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on April 14, 1935. He was the youngest of 12 boys. At one time the family boasted of having it’s own Hockey and Softball teams. He started his Military career as an Army Cadet in Halifax and then served four years as a Member of the Halifax Rifles and Canadian Army. After a medical condition, Brian became a member of the Royal Canadian Airforce and Canadian Forces for 28 years. He retired as Captain from the Canadian Forces in Winnipeg and continued a career in Public Relations with Canada Post for 20 more years.
Brian volunteered extensively and was a member of several boards and committees including the Army Cadet League of Manitoba, The Commissionaires, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Better Business Bureau, Manitoba Association for Children with Learning Disabilities, Canadian Public Relations Society of Canada, United Way of Winnipeg, Winnipeg Press Club, and the Royal Military Institute of Manitoba. He also enjoyed travelling and spending time outdoors.
Cremation will take place now with a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.
A special thank you to the Grace Hospital and The Heritage Lodge for taking good care of Brian while he was in their care.
Rather than flowers, a donation to The Heart & Stroke Foundation or The Grace Hospital Foundation would be preferred.
