CARL WILHELM (BILL) STRAUB MAY 9, 1931- NOVEMBER 2, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Carl Wilhelm (Bill) Straub. Bill passed away suddenly in the early morning of November 2, 2024, at the age of 93 years. Bill is survived by his loving wife Joyce (nee Wickum) after 71 years of marriage, as well as his children Barry (Sharron) Straub, Kathrine (Robert) Straub, Sheryl (John) Christie, and Brian (Kellie) Straub. Bill is also survived by his grandchildren Dayle and Trevor (Sabrina) Straub, Evan and Sean Christie, Cole and Kira Straub, and great grandchildren Savannah, Bradley and Marcus. Also left to mourn his passing is his sister Eleanor (Wayne) Baldwin, and several extended family members. Bill was predeceased by his parents Gustav and Lina Straub, his brothers Walter Straub and Fred Straub and his sister Anne Cohan.

Bill was the oldest child of Gustav and Lina Straub who immigrated from Germany in 1929, settling in Marquette, MB. He was born on May 9, 1931, growing up on the family farm near Marquette and attending school at Poplar Heights School. Bill left the farm to work across northwestern Canada where he met the love of his life, Joyce. Bill and Joyce were married in April 1953 in Prince George, BC. They often spent holiday time there visiting family, with their last visit in September 2024.

Bill and Joyce moved to Winnipeg in 1953 where they started their family. During this time Bill worked for Crescent Creamery and Modern Dairies in delivery and sales. Over the 40 plus years he worked at the dairy there was rarely a time when there was not ice cream in the freezer.

Bill retired from Beatrice Foods in 1996, and he and Joyce enjoyed travelling from that time forward. They spent a great deal of time in Hawaii where they became close with several local Hawaiians and other retirees who they stayed in touch with over the years and continued to travel to BC to connect with family. Bill enjoyed his walks and being active. He was known throughout St. James and would often be seen walking his twice daily route around the neighbourhood. He enjoyed his coffee time, and took great pleasure in being in the stands to watch his grandchildren compete in any number of sports. Bill and Joyce moved into the Westhaven in spring 2024 after 60 years on Fairlane Avenue. Bill always enjoyed connecting with people and taking the time to get to know them. Bill will be missed deeply by his family and many friends. Cremation has taken place. The interment will take place at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 at 11 a.m. As per his wishes no formal service will be held.
