David Edward Riddell
June 17, 1941 – September 27, 2024

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved David, a much-loved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. With his family by his side, Dave left us on September 27 at the age of 83 years. He will be deeply missed by June, his wife of 57 years, his daughter Susan Harrison (David), son Tim (Jennifer), Granddaughters Paige and Hailey, brother John (Cyndy), sister-in-law Pat Degen, as well as his nephew, nieces, and many close relatives and friends.

Dave was predeceased by his parents William and Rose Riddell, brother Patrick, in-laws Frank and Stephanie Neil, and brother-in-law Joe Degen.

Dave grew up in East Kildonan where he made friendships that would last his entire life. In the early 60’s, he met his wife June at the church youth bowling league and the rest was history. They married in 1967, later moving to East St. Paul where they started their family, welcoming first Susan, and then Tim a year later. He loved both his children dearly and was so very proud of all their accomplishments. When his granddaughters Paige and Hailey arrived, they brought new joy to his life. His love for them was immeasurable and he took great pride in watching them grow into the fine young women they are today. He was also always ready to give the girls some grandfatherly advice – whether or not it was asked for!

Dave spent several years working for K-Tel before starting his own business – Riddell Greenhouses. This was his true calling. Although he worked hard and the hours were long, he enjoyed seeing all the plants flourish and looked forward to welcoming back his regular customers year after year. Even now, long after he retired, we still hear from people who remember the beautiful geraniums he grew.

Sports were always a big part of Dave’s life. In his younger days he played football, and in 2009 was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the 1961 St. James Rods. He also coached football and baseball, played hockey, curled, and bowled. Above all else, however, Dave loved golfing and was a long-time member of Elmhurst Golf & Country Club. Unfortunately, a stroke in 2009 took away his ability to play golf but he never complained though he dearly missed his time on the links. A longtime fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs from the time he was young, he never stopped believing that it was going to be their year.

Dave, you are finally free from all the trials and tribulations you faced with such courage. We will love you and miss you for the rest of our days.

Thank you to CancerCare Manitoba and the St. Boniface Hospital for their kindness and compassion during his final days.

Cremation has taken place, and as per Dave’s wishes a Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2024, 1:00 p.m. at St. Alphonsus Hall, 341 Munroe Avenue.

Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so wish, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
