DENIS FRANCOIS MARCEL HAMONIC

Denis Francois Marcel Hamonic of St. Brieux, Saskatchewan passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at the Grace General Hospital in Winnipeg at the age of 79 years. He married the love of his life, Johanna Gessner, on May 9, 1962. He was extremely loving and proud of his four children.

Left to cherish Denis’ memory are his wife Johanna; children, Rene (Maureen), Greg (Carla), and Simone; grandchildren, Steven, Justin, Emily (Ben), Connor, and Darian. Denis was looking forward to the birth of his first great-grandchild in September. He is also survived by his siblings, Lionel (Aurore), Edouard, Lorette, and sister-in-law, Evelyn; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; as well as Johanna’s family. He will be greatly missed by all. He was predeceased by his parents; daughter Michelle in 1971; brother Gerard (Junk); brother-in-law Gerard Vaillancourt; and sister-in-law Maureen.

Denis was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan to Jules and Germaine Hamonic.In 1959, Denis graduated from Gravelbourg College with a BA. From 1960-1964 he was a pilot with the RCAF. Following that, he returned to Saskatchewan where he taught high school in Mistatim for one year. After teaching in Mistatim, Denis received his B.Ed. in Ottawa. In 1966, he applied and was accepted to Air Canada where he spent 39 years as a pilot flying all over the world.

Denis was passionate and supportive of his grandchildren and spent hours in hockey rinks and recitals. He kept himself active at the gym and with his volunteer activities. His numerous friends will miss him dearly.

Denis took pride in his involvement in St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church as a maintenance and bingo volunteer. He spent much of his time at Breezy Bend Golf and Country Club as a member and a maintenance volunteer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Paul the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 2400 Portage Avenue with Rev. Fr. Eric Giddins presiding. For those who wish, viewing will be held prior to Mass.  Inurnment will be held at a later date.
