DONALD STRATYCHUK
Peacefully after a brief illness it is with deep sorrow and regret that we announce the death of Donald Stratychuk on Friday, October 16, 2015 at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the age of 86 years.
Remaining to mourn Donald’s memory are his son Perry; numerous nieces; nephews; and friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 53 years, Catherine, in 2011.
Donald loved his family dearly and took pride in a home he and Cathy renovated and landscaped into a cottage in the city. He excelled in carpentry, photography and other interests including his favourite sport of golf, for which he won a championship in the 1960’s and played into his 80’s. Born on February 2, 1929 near Canora, Saskatchewan, Donald worked on farms before moving to St. Boniface, Manitoba and later, Ontario to work for Ontario Hydro and Minaki Lodge. With his wife and son, Donald returned to Manitoba where his career of 35 years with the City of Winnipeg included carpenter, park police officer, golf course superintendent and manager of city golf course maintenance until his retirement. A lover of nature and wildlife, Donald was also an avid reader of frontier and western novels, acquiring a collection of related books and movies. He also enjoyed auto shows, Star Trek and curling tournaments. With a keen interest in baseball, he followed the Toronto Blue Jays and attended an occasional Winnipeg Goldeyes game.
In compliance with Donald?s wishes, no formal Funeral Service will be held.
The family wishes to express sincere thanks to Dr. Borrett, Tracy, Val, Tamika and the staff on the 5th floor of the Grace Hospital for their compassion, care and professionalism through his brief and quiet stay there.
