EDITH LABINE
Mrs. Edith Labine died at approximately 1:00 pm, May 14, 2025, at Seven Oaks General Hospital in Winnipeg.
Edith is survived by her only child – daughter Patricia Truxal – and by brother-in-law André, sisters-in-law Ursule and Yolande, and a number of nephews and nieces – notably Céline Demarbre from Quebec. She was predeceased by her parents, and by her husband, Joseph Gilles Vianney Labine, in 2018.
Edith was born February 27, 1941, in Hademarschen, a district in northern Germany, to parents Hans and Margaretha Rohwer. She spent her childhood in the nearby town of Nortof.
On October 19, 1961, she married a Québécois from Montreal, who was overseas with the Army. After Patricia was born in 1963 the family moved to Canada, eventually settling in Winnipeg. In 1980 Edith and Gilles became the first owners of a newly incorporated condominium association in west Winnipeg.
Edith was glad to receive her Canadian citizenship but never lost touch with her roots, favouring German cuisine, TV, CDs, and magazines, and keeping an eye on German politics.
Although living much of her life with diabetes, food played a major role in Edith’s life. In the early 2000s she worked as a supervisor at The Paddlewheel Restaurant; at home the aroma of delicious homemade soups filled her kitchen. In her final years, when her appetite declined due to ill health, she would treat herself occasionally to Tim Hortons blueberry muffins.
According to Edith’s wishes there will be no memorial service. Cremation has taken place, and her ashes have been scattered with those of her late husband, whom she missed so much. We wish her peace.
