ERNEST EDWARD MULCAHY Peacefully, after a brief illness, on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Ernest, at the age of 89 years, left the ones who loved him. Remaining to forever cherish Ernest’s memory are daughter Diane (Robert); sons David and Brian (Joan); son-in-law Allen; sister Helen (Ricketts); eight grandchildren and their spouses; six great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Therese, and daughter Patricia. Ernest was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia on January 28, 1923. In 1940 at the age of 17 he enlisted in the Princess Louise Fusiliers. He fought and was wounded at the Battle of Casino in the Italian Campaign and subsequently served in Northwest Holland, France and Belgium. He returned to Canada after the war and worked at the Halifax Dockyards. Later returning to the army, he met and married Therese Emond on June 17, 1948 at Camp Borden, Ontario. Ernest again returned to the military as a member of the R.C.A.F. from 1951 until 1963, obtaining the rank of Sergeant, and serving in France and in various military bases in Canada. After retiring from the R.C.A.F., Ernest held a management position at InterCity Truck Lines. In his senior years Ernest remained very active with various service and military organizations. He served as President of the Royal Canadian Air Force Association for Saskatoon and Winnipeg. He was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion in various roles. He volunteered much time with the Air Cadets. He was a devoted member of St. Paul the Apostle Roman Catholic Church. He holds a Fourth Degree with the Knights of Columbus. Ernest was the recipient of many accolades over his lifetime, most recently the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002, and the Minister of Veteran Affairs Commendation in 2010, in recognition of his long-standing contributions in support of veterans. Funeral Liturgy will be Celebrated on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Paul the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 2400 Portage Avenue with Rev. Fr. José Eduardo Mederios, presiding. Entombment will follow in Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue. The family would like to thank the staff at the Grace Hospital Emergency and 3 North for the care given to Ernest.
