It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of our Mother and Grandmother. Ethel Stewart passed away on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at the age of 91 years.
Left to cherish Ethel’s memory are her daughter, Deidre Ellis and grandchildren, Scott and Laura Ellis; son, Christopher and granddaughter Tessa Peterson; sisters Joan Sutherland and Kathy Thompson; numerous nieces and nephews and great ones as well. Husband Alex Stewart had predeceased her, along with sisters Anne Fawns, Gladys Partridge, Ruth Mackay, Mary Boomer and granddaughter Shannon Ellis in May of 2009.
On January 11, 1927 Ethel was born in Winnipeg, the fourth of seven daughters to William and Ethel Fawns. She resided in the city’s west end. She attended Hugh John MacDonald and Daniel McIntyre Schools. Ethel worked at the Winnipeg General Hospital from 1946 until 1954 and returned to Health Sciences Center in 1966 until her retirement in 1991.
Ethel lived a long life and spent it closely with her sisters. She was wise and independent and enjoyed playing bingo, spending time with her grandchildren and going out to dinner with family and friends often. Ethel was the most caring and genuine woman you would ever meet; never afraid to give help and constantly offering words of positivity. Generosity and goodwill to her friends and neighbours were virtues she lived by. Ethel fondly remembered a trip to England and Scotland with the shrine group in 1977. She enjoyed the 30 years playing cards (poker) with the Shrine girls and loved what she called a “wonderful association” with the residents of the Kiwanis.

On Tuesday, March 13, 2018, Ethel’s Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. in Wojcik’s Funeral Chapel, 2157 Portage Avenue @ Sharp Boulevard.
The family would like to thank Winnipeg Paramedic and Police Service for their professional and dignified manor on March 7, 2018.
