It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother at the Grace Hospital surrounded by her family on Saturday, April 12th, 2025.
She is survived by her children Craig (Vanessa), Favel (Brad), Gavin, Kevin, grandchildren Harlan, Haley and Nyah. She also leaves behind sister Colleen (Christopher), sister in-law Jennifer (Darryl) and brothers-in-law Brian, Malcom (Gwen), Oscar and Raj and their families including many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and grand nephews.
Freda is predeceased by her beloved husband Arthur, her parents George and Annie Layette, brother Hebert, brother Winston, sister’s in-law Dorothy, Rose, Marine and Bunny.
Freda was born in Bangalore, India August 15th, 1941 and was educated at the Good Sheppard Convent. She loved growing up in India and spoke fondly of her school days, sharing many animated stories and creating many lifelong friendships.
She met Arthur at the age of 19 and soon after married and immigrated to Canada in 1970. Freda and Arthur enjoyed travelling back to India, also had the privilege of visiting many other countries including taking a much-loved Caribbean cruise with friends. Freda worked many years with the provincial government enjoying her working life immensely, while also caring for her family and working hard to make every occasion special for all of us. Freda had a strong spiritual strength, unending energy, and vibrant personality, creating friendships everywhere she went.
Freda was stylish and loved to dress up, go out and look her best. She enjoyed gardening, going to the racetrack and especially loved to be involved with her church community. She was a member of the Catholic Women’s League.
Freda was loved and will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her.
Our family would like to thank her lifelong physician Dr. Jonathan Elkin for his exceptional care throughout her life.
Viewing will be held at 10:00am, with a funeral mass at 11:00am on Thursday, May 1st at St Charles Roman Catholic Parish, 320 St Charles Street, Winnipeg, MB. Internment and reception to follow.
