It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother on Monday, March 9, 2015.
Gladys is survived by and will sadly missed by her husband Gordon; children, Kimberley (Bob), Murray (Cheryl), and Dave; loving grandchildren Kelly, Erin and Natalie. Other immediate surviving family members include sisters, Kay (Vancouver, BC), Ellie (Olds, AB), Bridgette (Edmonton, AB), Ruby (Calgary, AB); brothers, Ed (Edmonton, AB), Garry (Edison, AB); and sister-in-law Marilyn (Edmonton, AB). She was predeceased by her parents Lydia and John Heschel; sisters, Irene, Sonja, Jenny; brothers, Victor, Larry, and Oswald; in laws Evelyn and Johnny Ulmer, William Wegar, Otto Beiber, Eddie and Violet Schmidt, Walter and Lillian Schmidt, Walter Schweitzer, and Roy Youck.
On January 8, 1928 Gladys was born in Hodgeville, SK. She graduated from nursing in 1950, and made her way to Neudorf, SK where she met the love of her life Gordon Schmidt at a dance at the Neudorf Hall. Love prevailed and they got married in Winnipeg at the Lutheran Church of the Cross. On October 14, 2014 Gladys and Gordon celebrated their 62nd anniversary.
Gladys worked as a nurse for over 50 years. She worked as a head nurse at the Misericordia Hospital for three years, then continuing on as the head nurse at Westbrook Medical Centre. She then took a short break to raise her family. Gladys worked until her retirement at age 70. She was well respected by all of her colleagues, doctors, fellow nurses, and other professionals. She was an amazing cook and baker. Gladys loved to entertain and enjoyed many successful dinner parties. She loved playing cards with family and friends. She had a passion for gardening and mastered the skillful art of petit pointe. Many of Gladys? petit pointe creations are still displayed in her home.
On Friday, March 13, 2015 Gladys? Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. in Lutheran Church of the Cross, 560 Arlington Street with Pastor Kolleen Karlowsky-Clark presider. For those who wish viewing will be held prior to the Service. A private family Interment will be held.
The family would like to thank Dr. Penner and the staff at the Victoria General Hospital.
In lieu of flowers the family would suggest a donation to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
