GLEN ROYSTON BALL
Glen Royston Ball left this Earth peacefully, with his family by his side, on Monday, September 28, 2015 at Portage General Hospital, at the age of 87 years.
Left to cherish Glen?s memory are his loving wife of 58 years, Louise; sons, Richard and Shane (Tannis); daughter, Treasure (Hal); grandchildren, Alayna (Donaldo), Joshua and Brittany; great-grandchildren, Evan, Royce and Talia; brother, Barry; as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Dorothy (nee Jones) and Frederick Ball; and sister Joyce Roper.
On February 25, 1928 Glen was born in Edmonton, Alberta. When he was a young child he moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his parents, where Glen remained for the most of his life. He dabbled in a few different businesses; he was an owner of gas service stations, became GM of a couple of car dealerships, but all the while he had a hobby he loved, training and working with horses. Glen?s horse hobby started with the training of horses to do tricks for Horse Shows and Fairs. As times changed, in the late 1960?s, he started his life-long career of over 40 years as a Thoroughbred Racehorse Trainer. With wife Louise as full partner in this enterprise, along with their children, they worked as a successful team for most of Glen?s career. He achieved 475 wins racing at Assiniboia Downs and a few other racetracks south of the border. Glen was instrumental in helping develop the caliber of local breed in Manitoba by purchasing high-valued horses from the USA for clients, and bringing them to Manitoba to race. This helped to improve the Manitoba racing industry as a whole with the demand for better horses to compete and improved breeding stock in Manitoba.
Glen enjoyed golfing, skiing and loved hunting. Family was always important to him, and in recent years, he especially enjoyed his time spent with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A recent highlight of Glen?s life was a vacation trip to Hawaii that Glen and Louise enjoyed together.
A celebration of Glen?s life will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in Assiniboia Downs (2nd floor), 3975 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB.
