HARRY LONGLEY DARLING
JULY 16, 1947 – APRIL 20, 2023
It is with deep sadness we announce the death of Harry Longley Darling (age 75) on April 20, 2023, at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Harry was a long-time resident of the Treherne area but he spent his final 3 years in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Harry is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lorraine Darling (nee Pawlson), son Terry Darling (Pam), daughter Brandy Pantel, grandchildren Bryce Pantel and Julia Pantel, sisters Gwen Evans and Frances Mawby (Gordon) as well as numerous other relatives and friends. Harry was predeceased by his parents Charlie and Annie (nee Harland), his sister and brother-in-law Diane and Reiner Bauer, brother-in-law Alton Evans, nephews Gary Evans (and wife Debbie) and Ron Evans.
At the start of his working life, Harry spent some time at the mines in Thompson, Manitoba and with Manitoba Hydro but when the opportunity presented itself, he returned home to start farming with his father. Harry married Lorraine in 1972 and over the years they expanded their land base including buying the family farm from Charlie and Annie in 1984.
Harry was a proud farmer and his innovative use of aeration brought a huge change to their operation. He was a long-time member of the Manitoba Pool Elevators and served as Secretary for the Treherne branch. An avid hockey dad, he drove to practices and games, often with a carload of players. Being an able carpenter, he volunteered to work on the Bethel Church and the change rooms at the Treherne Rink.
Harry enjoyed travelling, fishing, playing cards, and having company over. After his retirement in 2000, he kept his hand in farming by helping with harvest on the Jackson farm.
Harry enjoyed a rich life and saw the end out with his wife, son, daughter, and grandchildren by his side.
The family would like to offer thanks to Dr. Vorster, Harry’s family physician of many years, and the geriatric doctors at Deer Lodge and Riverview Day Hospital who were so supportive in his journey with frontal temporal atrophy. Last but not least we would like to acknowledge the tremendous support of the nurses, health care aids, support staff, and doctors who cared for Harry while he was a resident at Riverview Health Centre – you made a tremendous difference in Harry’s life and made a very difficult situation a little easier for him and his family.
Harry’s ashes will be interned at Bethel Cemetery in Treherne and a celebration of life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Harry’s name to Riverview Health Centre (Unit AB1).
