Ian John McQueen Stewart Russell

November 28, 1946 to January 8, 2023

After a lengthy illness, we sadly announce the passing of Ian Russell on January 8, 2023 at St. Norbert Personal Care Home at the age of 76.

Ian is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lesley, and children Sean, Allyson (son-in-law Cory), Sam and Susan. Ian was predeceased by his daughter Andrea, parents John and Anna, mother and father-in-law Maurice and Barbara, and brother Drew.

Ian is also survived by his siblings Tom, Kenny, Heather and Val, their spouses, children and extended family.

Ian was born in Scotland and moved to Canada as a young boy. As a young man, he enjoyed playing hockey and his favourite position was goalie. When Ian was healthier he loved spending time in nature, including fishing at George Lake, hunting and golfing. He also loved dogs and was especially proud of training the family dog, Bingo, how to skateboard. Ian was also proud of his 35 year career as an  electrical designer, some of his most notable work being done at Health Sciences Centre.

Ian was a committed husband and father to his family, he worked hard his whole life and did the best he could. Ian fought lifelong with hearing loss and, being the stubborn Scot he was, never gave up the battle. Even though Ian struggled with communicating, he made sure we knew he loved us all deep down, most times in the form of “quit horsin’ around”.

There will be no formal memorial held for Ian. His ashes will be spread in a private ceremony by his family in the spring.

Thank you to all of the staff on the west wing at St. Norbert Personal Care Home for their kindness, compassion and patience over the past two-and-a-half years.

Ian’s quiet and constant presence will be deeply missed.

We love you “Grumpy”!
