JAMES R. SOOKRAM
February 13, 1922 – October 21, 2017
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved James Ramnarine Sookram, on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at the Grace Hospital at the age of 95 years. We are blessed to have shared in his long and wonderful life with family and friends. Remaining to cherish James’ memory are his children Leechan (Cynthia), Bharat (Dorothy), Pat, Tara, and Rennie; grandchildren; Zita, Angela, Ryan, Leanne, Melanie (John), Chad (Adrienne), Melissa (Ross), Candace (Mike); great-grandchildren Mariah, Mikayla, Tyra, Brianna, Dryden, Matthew, Jersey, Sienna and Brooklynn and five remaining siblings. He was predeceased by Paula Sookram; his sons Ralph, Cocoal; and son-in-law Clint McCracken. Dad was born and raised in Tabaquite, Trinidad. He drove trucks for his father’s company Sookram & Sons. He also drove trucks during the war for the U.S. Military, and after Sookram & Sons, he ventured out into a joint trucking business. In 1970 Dad moved his family to Winnipeg in hopes of giving them a better life. He worked at Economy Textile, St. Paul’s High School and then the Assiniboine Gordon Hotel. Grandpa enjoyed boys’ nights with his sons, brother and some other “boys from home”. He liked to talk about the old days while sitting down with a rum or brandy in hand. Pappy was proud of all his children, but particularly proud of his grand and great grandchildren. A private celebration of his life will be held on Friday, October 27, 2017 and he’ll be laid to rest in peace at Brookside Cemetery, 3001 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg. We would like to express our thanks to the staff at Oakview Place and Grace Hospital for their care and support of our beloved. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
