JAMES STEWART
It is with a broken heart that I announce the death of my best friend and husband of 58 years, James in the early hours of Monday, February 6th, 2023 at the Grace Hospital, Winnipeg, Manitoba. James fought for and won through health issues for 10 years including kidney dialysis, kidney transplant, major heart surgery, cancer and COPD.
James is survived by (me), his wife Anne Marie; his beloved and so loved son Colin, whom he was so proud of and our daughter-in-law Tamara, and the pride and joy of his life, his two grandchildren, Titus and Siobhan. He is also survived by one sister in England as well as numerous nieces and nephews throughout Europe, Australia and the UK. James was predeceased by his seven brothers in the UK.
James retired as a Partner at SMS Engineering (previously Scouten Mitchell Sigurdson) in 2014. At SMS he was a Senior Mechanical Designer and Project Manager. He worked on many projects including numerous healthcare and commercial projects. He was very well respected throughout the construction industry. After retirement, James returned to SMS to work on a consulting basis.
Chris Hewitt, President of SMS Engineering noted “James was a huge part of the success of SMS Engineering and the mechanical community having worked over 50 years in the industry. He will have impacted the careers of us all, whether you worked with him or not.”
Notable projects of James’ include those at the Richardson Centre, Canada Life and the Health Sciences Centre including the Critical Services Redevelopment at Anne Thomas Centre, Central Energy Plant 2 and the new Women’s Hospital.
After retiring from SMS, and always one to keep busy, James recently began assisting our team with specification documentation. In true James fashion, he would walk around the office mentioning things that needed attending to, no detail was too small for his attention.
While he was known for his excellence in design and project management, James took tremendous pride in delivering excellent customer service to his clients and was honoured to receive the 2011 BOMA Manitoba Pinnacle Award for Outstanding Customer Service on behalf of SMS. He was SMS’ original member representative to BOMA Manitoba when the firm joined in 1994.
“This week SMS have been fondly remembering James and ask those of you who knew him to do the same.”
James was a dedicated member of Breezy Bend Golf & Country Club where he had many true and supportive friends. A very special mention to John Robertson, “you were always there for him”, Wayne Armstrong, who was always ready to help, Ted Murray, and Tom, and the rest of his golf partners.
Funeral Service (Not a Mass), will be held at 12 p.m. (noon) on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Roblin Boulevard (Corner of Roblin & Grant Ave.).
I would like to offer thanks to the Grace Hospital, with heartfelt and sincere thanks to Dr. Aimee Li; nurses Cheryl and Andrea of 3 North.
