JANET MARION VICKERS
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved sister and aunt on Friday, November 10, 2017 at the Grace Hospital at the age of 85 years. Left to mourn Janet’s passing are her brother, Ivan; sisters Betty Nathu (Ken), Madeleine Crawford; special nephew and niece Keith Crawford and Elizabeth Kowalchuk and nieces Donna, Helen, Grace, Joyce, Kay and Sylvia, nephews Grant, Brandon, Damien and Levi. Janet was born on December 3, 1931 in Baldur, Manitoba. At the age of nine, she was stricken with polio. With the help of her brother and sisters pushing her on her wheelchair in the summer and pulling her on a toboggan in the winter, she completed her grade 12. For over 30 years, Janet worked for Braithwaites Wholesale Drugs. She was an active member of Wheel Chair Sports. She became a swimmer and took part in events across Canada and Germany, winning several medals. After Janet’s swimming days were over, she continued to be an active member of Wheel Chair Sports. One of the joys of Janet’s life was learning to drive with hand controls and she spent many enjoyable hours in her car. Janet lived in her own apartment at Birchwood Terrace for 30 years. She then moved to the St. James Kiwanis Courts Assisted Living for 6 1/2 years. At Janet’s request, no formal funeral services will be held. The family would like to thank the staff at Kiwanis Courts for their help and friendship and also all the homecare workers who helped her. Donations may be made to Wheelchair Sports or to the Grace Hospital Foundation. Wojcik’s Funeral Chapels & Crematoriums, Winnipeg, 2157 Portage Avenue, 204.897.4665 www.wojciksfuneralchapel.com
If Janet had a motto, it would be,
“If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”
And that is what she did.
