JOHN WILLIAM WRIGHT
MARCH 14, 1939 – DECEMBER 15, 2024

We sadly announce the death of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, John William Wright at the Grace Hospital on December 15, 2024.

Cherishing his memory is his wife of 65 years, Jean; his daughters Wendy Mahoney (Glen deceased) and Debbra Jansz; his granddaughters Chrystal Jansz-Rieken (Kasey) of Texas and Melissa Mahoney (Jearum Kurtz) of Winnipeg; his treasured great-grandchildren, Asher Reiken, Texas; Madisyn, Jaidyn, Jillyan and Mackenzie Kurtz, Alyssa Hibbert and Xavier Smith all of Winnipeg

John was predeceased by his parents George and Greta Wright, from Moose Jaw; his in-laws Harry and Bessie McLaren from North Bay and Winnipeg; his son-in-law Glen Mahoney and grandchildren Diana Palmerton, Jessica and Scott Mahoney; his siblings Georgina Lawrence, Robert, Edward, Richard (Marie) and Ronald.

John is survived by siblings Bernice Glover (late Lloyd), Barbara Yates (Rod), Cathy Plowman (Tony), Steven (Valerie) and Judy Steadman as well as many nieces and nephews.

John was born and raised in Moose Jaw as one of the 10 children and attended school there. His early ventures into the workforce were as a paper boy, a Red Cap for the CPR and electrical apprentice before joining the RCAF in 1956 thru to 1982 as an Airframe Technician serving in Europe and throughout Canada.

John met Jean in North Bay in September 1959 and after a whirlwind courtship they were married December 18, 1959. In November 1960 Wendy came along and Debbra shortly after in 1962. His little family was now complete.

After military years, John was employed at Nipissing University Canadore College at the Heliport Training site in North Bay from 1983 to 1996. This time retiring and turning to Branch 23, Royal Canadian Legion and golf courses to fill his days. Summers were busy in North Bay and winters at their condo in Florida discovering new golf courses, restaurants and cruise life making many new friends along the way.

2011 brought John and Jean back to Winnipeg to be near family. Around 2016 John’s health and diminishing vision played a big part in his activities but trips to Florida and cruising still played a part.

This past summer, his health rapidly deteriorated with much time spent in the hospital until he had to give up his struggles to carry on.

At this time, we would like to thank the Grace Hospital 3rd Floor for the care and compassion afforded John and his family as they sat with him during his final days.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held January 28, 2025 at the Royal Canadian Legion, Upper Hall, 1755 Portage Avenue. A graveside service will be held in July 2025 at Brookside Cemetery, Field of Honor in Winnipeg.

In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to the Grace Hospital Foundation or the Heart & Lung Association.
