JOYCE ELIZABETH CAMERON(nee AIREY)
Peacefully, in the early morning of Monday, July 18, 2016 Joyce Cameron (nee Airey) passed away at the age of 89, after a lengthy struggle with vascular dementia. Left to mourn Joyce’s passing are her sister-in-law Katherine (Kitt) Airey; daughter Alice Russell (Colin); son Randy (Tracie Decourcey); grandchildren Cameron, Kayleigh and Ella Russell, Katie Decourcey, and Callum and Ciaran Cameron; nephews and nieces Graham Cameron (Diane), Belle Cameron, David Pethrick (Sandra), Wayne Pethrick (Louella), Tim Pethrick (Deb); her Indiana nieces and nephews (Airey) Janice, Linda, Keith, Kathy, Christine, and Carol; and numerous grand-nieces and nephews. Joyce was predeceased by her parents, John (Jack) and Alice Airey; husband Doug; brother Jeff; sister and best friend Jean Pethrick; and Jean’s husband Danny. Joyce’s parents emigrated from Liverpool after World War I, and she was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on June 14, 1927. She grew up on a dairy farm in Balmoral, Manitoba which was threatened when her dad contracted tuberculosis. The family moved to Sturgeon Road in St. James, then called Victoria Road, and later to Thompson Drive. Joyce attended St. James Collegiate and graduated from Nursing at Misericordia Hospital in 1949. She enjoyed a long career working at the Convalescent Home and in the operating rooms of Deer Lodge and Seven Oaks Hospitals. In 1965, Joyce married Douglas Cameron and they shared many happy years in the house on Woodhaven Boulevard with their kids Alice Mary and Randolph. A long-time member of Sturgeon Creek United Church, Joyce also was active in the Woodhaven Ladies Bridge Club, gatherings of both her high school friends and her Misericordia Class of ’49er chums, and visiting many other friends and acquaintances. She loved music and played the piano, was an avid concert-goer, and delighted in her children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments in music, dance, and sports. Wonderful summers were spent at the family cottage at Victoria Beach and on trips to Linden, Indiana to visit her brother Jeff and family. A highlight vacation was a 1995 trip to England and Scotland to visit both Airey and Cameron relatives. Joyce’s Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in Sturgeon Creek United Church, 207 Thompson Drive, Winnipeg, Manitoba. All are welcome. A private family Interment will take place. The family would like to thank the staff of Tuxedo Villa for their great care for Mom as her health declined over the past few months.
