KAZIMER BORIS MATIESHIN

Kazimer Boris Matieshin passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, November 3, 2022.

He was born in Grandview, Manitoba on July 29, 1933, to Mary Kondra and John Matieshin, He leaves to mourn his wife Wilma of 67 years; children Kevin (Cathy), Wanda (Bruce), Cheryl (Doug), Gwenda (Reid), Jill (John); 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his siblings Morris and Iris.

Kaz lost his father at the young age of 2 and as a teenager he always had a job to help his family. He started teaching at the age of 17 in a one-room schoolhouse and came to Winnipeg to finish Normal School, sometimes hitchhiking to get there. Kaz obtained his Batchelor of Science degree from Brandon University while raising 3 little kids under 4 years of age. Those kids had some adventures while Dad was sleeping and Mom was working evenings/nights as a nurse.

After being an interim teacher in Brookdale, Wawanesa and Rivers teaching high school chemistry, the family moved to Winnipeg in 1967. He worked as a chemist at Standard Chemical until his retirement in 1989. He could speak Ukrainian and a little French too. Kaz was a handyman extraordinaire and was always doing some project at home, at the cottage or at one of his children’s homes. He loved to garden in the summer and Wilma would say he would first check the garden when he came home from work before he came in to see her. Starting his curling career in high school he continued well into his 70’s, a long-time member of Deer Lodge Curling Club. Kaz and Wilma were also active in the community club and Silver Heights United Church.  He was a wonderful father and grandfather, always there for help with a science fair project or a ride to a hockey practice or game. He will be missed.
