LEONE ANN DURHAM

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Leone Ann Durham on Dec.3rd, after a sudden brief illness. She is grieved by: her daughter Louise, and husband Scott and their son Aidan; her son Ed, and his wife Linda and daughter Tammy; her son James and wife Leanne and their son Ethan; Leone’s sister Myrna Voell and her children Mark, Paul, Karen and Bruce and their families, cousin Florence Boylan and her family; and cousins Wayne and Barry Winkler; as well as lifelong friend Doreen Smith.

Leone lived a full 92 years, born and raised in the large Lindstrom family of Kenora, Ontario. Leone graduated nursing training as an RN from the old Grace Hospital forming an enduring friendship with fellow nursing student Joanne Anderson, and her family. Leone furthered her nursing studies in Jersey City, New Jersey where she completed courses in OR nursing and Obstetrics. She married the love of her life – Tom Durham – moving back to Winnipeg to work and raise a family, and spending summers on Lake of the Woods. Her nursing career spanned over 4 decades working at the Children’s and Misericordia Hospitals then at Central Park Lodge, eventually becoming the Director of Nursing. It was here she bonded and shared a dear friendship with fellow nurse Liz Campbell.

In her retirement Leone also cherished the friendships she made as a resident of Dakota House and enjoyed and participated in the warm caring community there. Leone was an avid reader, loved house plants and gardening and sharing her delicious baking with her family. We imagine her in Valhalla, with all her departed loved ones, which bears a close resemblance to her beloved Lake.

Leone faced death with the same courage and practicality she faced life, ‘let’s get it done and let’s do it properly.’ She loved and cared deeply about her family; her last concern was about our well being. Leone will remain forever in our hearts and will be remembered and missed by her family and friends. May she rest in peace.
