I first met Fay sometime in the mid-1990s here on our home island of Galiano located just off of the BC coast. Fay was then on what had become an annual driving holiday visit to the west coast, to Galiano, to visit mutual friends, Jane Rule & Helen Sonthoff. At the time I was the house gardener & p/t driver to the aging Helen & Jane. The latter job included retrieving & returning guests from & to the island's BC Ferries dock. On one of these drives with Fay she mentioned that Jane had told her I collected flags. "But do you have the Manitoba flag", she asked. I didn't, to which Fay replied, "well, we are going to have to get you one !". Indeed, a couple of weeks later a pkg arrived in my mailbox from Fay that contained ... a Manitoba flag. I wrote her a Thank you to which she replied, which I answered, to which she replied ... & so on. Fay was a great writer of descriptive, informative, entertaining letters. A correspondence had begun &, a friendship. From then on her holidays on Galiano also included long walks with me & my partner, Marek, tours of garden & more. Fay was always an interesting & interested companion. Helen died in 2000, Jane in 2007. Fay paid one final visit to the island in 2008 to attend a burial service for Jane held in our local cemetery just a short walk from our home. Afterwards Fay visited us there for tea & cake. It was our last time seeing Fay. (the photo above is from that visit.) But, the correspondence continued. Letters, cards, postcards, great pkgs of newspaper clippings. Phone calls, too. Fay was always eager to receive news about us, our lives &, she was equally eager to share her own stories. Fay will be well & happily remembered.

To say that Marlyne, known to me as Fay, is just a nurse is an understatement of who this wonderful women was. She was a nurse, but also a friend, a councillor, and a confidant to many, and an adopted mother to me and my partner. I met Fay through a padre in the early 90’s and she helped me through some of the most difficult struggles of my life. For that I want everyone to know how grateful I am to have known her. She remained a friend for the past 30 years. She will always be remembered for her love and concern for so many and her huge volunteer contributions. We loved you Fay and wish for you to Rest In Peace! Thank you for touching my life the way that you did and you will always be remembered??
