Dear Phyllis and family. We were deeply saddened to hear of the parting of Mike. We always enjoyed spending time with you both at the Conventions, and Mike and I (Judy) joking and talking about our Icelandic heritage. I remembering telling Wolfgang one time at one of the conventions, That Mike ALWAYS had a big bright smile on his face, especially when he looked at you Phyllis. He was a big man, that has left a big presence on everyone that met him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. With Love and friendshipJudy and Wolfgang Rolke

If a man's worth can be measured by the quality of the people left behind, then Mr. Schioler's worth is immeasurable. His influence on the people he came in contact with was profound, and I don't know a person that knew him that had anything but the greatest respect for him. My deepest sympathies to all members of the Schioler clan. Cherish your memories of 'Big Mike,' and he will always be with you.

I was saddened to hear of Uncle Mike's passing. I have great and fond memories of his kindness, humour and hospitality at the Schioler cottage at Victoria Beach in my childhood days. What a great guy he was, what a great man - I learned so much reading this obituary! I wish all the Schiolers' the best in this time of loss and gathering together in loving memory.

Dear Uncle Mike,Here is how I will remember you. You in your floppy beach hat, loose short-sleeved shirt and baggy shorts, walking down to the beach with a towel around your neck. You hunched over doing the dishes in the cottage so that you wouldn't bang your head. Seemed like you were always washing dishes! How you always called me Barbie Doll and coming from you, I kinda liked it! Driving home with you and your gang from VB and how you would honk and wave to who knows what all along the highway. Little memories that warm the heart. Thank-you for being a part of our lives. Love to you, Auntie Phyllis (so glad to have talked to you) and to you Kim (love you) and to Tom, Dave, Kai and Linda. Hugs and kisses. Thinking of you today. Barbie-Doll.

It has been said that:“Uniqueness is hard to find… yet it is unmistakable once you come across it.”Thus, it isn’t a stretch to say that Mr. Schioler was one of those truly uniquely special people – much more than his towering 6’5” physical stature. It had a lot to do with both his easy laugh and soothing demeanor which would ensure that the mood in the room never got too serious. And underpinning those assets was his strength-of-character. For when the time needed it, you knew he could be counted on to be both firm and fair in the most disarming and calming manner. And with those qualities as a backdrop, Mr. Schioler’s myriad business achievements – coupled with his unarguable successes as a father, grandfather, trusted relative, respected friend and trustworthy neighbor – seemed inevitable. In addition, there was humility about Mr. Schioler that quietly underscored his greatness and ensured he would be remarkable in many people’s lives. On a more personal note, I used to joke to some folks that “all I am today is because of people whom it is not too late to punish”. Mr. Schioler was one of those people in my life. In short – and at risk of sounding hackneyed – he made a difference in it. Period.Outside of my own folks who were busy being great parents in their own right – including the sometimes-needed “tough love” – Mr. Schioler’s presence in my life was an absolute godsend and was complementary to what my Mom & Dad were trying to achieve with me. And it came at a critical juncture. After me being kicked-out twice and put on probation once in Engineering at the University of Manitoba [sic

I had the good fortune of visiting with Big Mike Schioler in the Grace Hospital about a week before his passing. My daughters Shannon and Danielle informed me Far Far wasn't doing well in the hospital...Shannon was especially distraught as she had just seen him... and that it wasn't good. The next day I went to the Grace not knowing what to expect...got off the elevator...walked around the corner and there was Mike in a wheel chair reading the paper and talking with Philly Baby on his cell phone... pardon me...I meant he was listening on the cell phone to Phil:)... he interrupted ...informed her that I had arrived and would speak with her in a bit. I sat beside him and told him the girls were very worried but now that I see ya...tell the doctor I will give you a ride home...he laughed and said he's not in today...so I probably won't go home for a couple of days. All I could think of ...how I couldn't wait to tell my daughters the good news...Far Far's going home in a couple days...I sat next to him and we reminisced. The great times at St. Charles C.C ... How we (the kids) always had Tom order the wine because he always asked for it the same way...please bring us a couple of bottles of Cabernet ....Tommy would then whisper....the ones with the most dust on em :):). The times at The Manitoba Club with our friend the late Gerry Perinot...Good Times....He loved to tell the story of going under the Bridge and me making a wish...you'll have to ask Phyllis to finish the story :):) ...(He spoke of how proud he was of Shannon and Dani....he told me how he felt Kim saved his life...if it wasn't for Kim he felt he wouldn't be here talking to me right now. I showed him photos of Shannon fishing and the girls around the Xmas Tree with their boy friends and Nana. I thanked him for being such a good guy....He thanked me for that. He told me how he loved playing taxi cab for all the grandchildren. He told me he had a good ride...wished he would have listened to Tom and quit smoking...I said did you enjoy smoking...he said with a chuckle sure....I said we'll ....84 in Nov...not a bad card. He laughed and said...you're right ...I never thought of it like that...and laughed again... Mike was just that easy going guy! He was a giver...always put his family ahead of him. I saw it many, many, many times. He was a gentle giant...but u wouldn't want to make him mad:). He was an accomplished business man...a well educated man. I believe he was the engineering stick at university...head of the fraternity....Those of us who knew him...were better people for it... Mike knew he was going home in few days... he told me so...it just wasn't back to the Condo in Bruce Park...so he gathered the troops as always...and all got to say their good byes. My deepest condolences to the Entire Schioler Family...I text my friend Glenn Smith with the news of Mike's passing....he replied back...that's too bad...he was one of the last Good Guys! SKOL to you Mike. SKOL to you!
