NIEKOLAAS (NICK) LANINGA
Peacefully, on Sunday, September 25, 2016, Nick passed away at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, at the age of 76 years. Left to forever remember Nick are, Lynne his wife of 53 years; children, Nikki (Dale), Shelly (Greg), Jackie (Wade), Lorraine, and Kirby (Ang); sister, Hannie; sister-in-law, Tini; brothers-in-law, Wayne, Greg, and Rob(Donna); grandchildren, Randy (Kacee), Katie (Tyler), Raymond, Natasha, Kelsey, Gillian, Justin, Holly, MacKenna, Alex, Quinn, and Carter; great-grandchildren, Chase, Anna, Lia, Wylie, and Evyn; as well as numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his mother Kathrina; father Niekolaas; and nine brothers and sisters. Born in the Netherlands, Nick immigrated to Canada in 1958, settling in Winnipeg in 1959. He was a clock maker by trade operating as the Laninga Clock Shop. He worked 20 years in retail grocery and owned a successful swimwear business with Lynne for 25 years. Family was the most important thing in Nick’s life. He had a daily routine of coffee and a crossword puzzle with Lynne. It was a joy for him to watch his grandchildren at Sunday pool parties and listened intently as they shared stories with their Opi. Nick looked forward to every gathering, every laugh. His favorite hobbies were model cars and train sets. He was resourceful, making a folding train wall display, a replica windmill (the focal point of the yard) and a screamin’ toboggan out of wooden skis. A private celebration of Nick’s life will be held at a later date. Many thanks go to the dedicated staff in the Grace Hospital’s ICU. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Lung Association, 1 Wesley Avenue #301, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 4C6.
