OLGA (OLLIE) SHIRLEY
ATAMANCHUK
February 22, 1934 – November 1, 2022

 With profound sadness and broken hearts, we announce the passing of our Mom, Grandma, and Great-Grandma, Ollie Atamanchuk on Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at the age of 88. Left to mourn her passing are her children; Melaney Vermeylen (Dan), Stephen Atamanchuk (Barb), Allison Wong (Gord), grandchildren; Bryan (Annaka), Karen (Tristan), Alex, Wyatt, Gabrielle, great-grandchildren; Celeste, Bram, Milo, sisters-in-law; Livia, Lil, Elsie (Lloyd), Margaret, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Mom was predeceased by; husband John, parents Bill and Anne Rudniski, sisters; Mary, Frances, Stella, brother Joe, brother-in-law Metro and grandson Jonathan.

Mom was born in Saskatoon and grew up on a farm in rural Saskatchewan. She met Dad when he was teaching in the Swan River Valley and she was working as a bank teller. They were married on July 11, 1953 and were blessed with three children. Mom had a successful career as a primary school teacher, much loved in the classroom. After her children had grown, she rejoined the workforce and worked at Sears for over 25 years, winning numerous awards as a sales associate. Mom excelled at everything she did and was loved by all.

Mom’s greatest joy was her family. She was actively involved in her children’s school and was a proud supporter of their music and sports endeavours and later, of her grandchildren’s pursuits. She was their number one fan.

Mom instilled a love of travel in her children. There were many happy camping trips and winter holidays. Upon retirement, Mom and Dad travelled to numerous destinations in Canada and the US. They especially enjoyed their summer home in the Gimli trailer park where they spent many happy times with close friends. In recent years, Las Vegas became her favourite destination.

Mom also instilled her love of nature in her family. She was a gardener and an animal lover. Rainbows, sunsets, moonrises and star gazing were shared, and glorious mornings were celebrated. Mom truly had an adventurous spirit and a zest for life. She was a dreamer.

Mom was an excellent Ukrainian cook and a gracious host. Meals in the Atamanchuk household were feasts. Abundant food, drink, music, and laughter were the norm. Many special times were had by family and friends alike.

Mom was a passionate sports fan and loved her Bombers and Jets. Watching curling was a favourite. She could “talk sports ” with anyone.

Mom made many friends at 455 Westwood Drive and cherished her time there.

Mom was a beautiful singer, a life-long learner, a good sport and had a wonderful sense of humour. Faith was important to her. She was a fervent supporter of dozens of charities. Mom was everything to us. She was our best friend, our teacher, our inspiration, and our hero. She lived a full life of good times with those she loved. She’ll be missed dearly. A life well lived.

Our family would like to thank Dr. Elkin who cared for mom for many years. Thanks also to Dr. Koven and Father Alan Wizinski at Simkin Centre. Our hearts are filled with gratitude and love for the entire staff at Simkin Centre. Your kindness, compassion and care for Mom and our family was outstanding. We are forever grateful. Mom knew she was loved.

Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday, November 10 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Basil’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 202 Harcourt St. with Rev. Fr. Mykhaylo Khomitskyy presiding. Interment will follow in the Assumption Cemetery, 3990 Portage Ave.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in Ollie’s name can be made to Winnipeg Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
