OLIVER (OLLIE) STROMMEAugust 25, 1923 – January 13, 2017
On Friday, January 13, 2017, Oliver passed away at the Grace Hospital, at the age of 93 years. Ollie was an exceptionally devoted husband and dedicated father, who always put his family’s interests well ahead of his own. He will be lovingly remembered by daughters, Linda Stromme (David Geneen (d.)) and Lorraine Kimpel (Dana); grandchildren, Allan Kimpel, Eric Kimpel (Stephanie), Daniel Geneen and Julian Geneen; as well as nieces; nephews and friends. He was married to Nellie (Janczyn), the love of his life, for over 61 years until her death in 2010. On August 25, 1923, Oliver was born on the Saskatchewan Prairie to Annie (Moen) and Hans Stromme and was the last survivor among a close family of six siblings. Ollie and Nellie left his Saskatchewan farm and moved to Winnipeg in the early 1950s where Ollie launched a dynamic entrepreneurial career as the owner of several major service stations, including locations at Amherst Street, Mount Royal Road and finally near the White Horse west of Headingley. Ollie’s successful career culminated with his role in senior management at the Canadian Automobile Association. Ollie was a proud veteran of World War II, who never lost interest in current affairs and maintained his independence until the end. He was a talented musician and regularly entertained the residents at Kiwanis Courts with his guitar and lively vocals. In compliance with Ollie’s wishes, no formal Funeral Service will be held. We wish to thank the wonderful staff at Metropolitan Kiwanis Courts as well as the doctors and nurses at Grace Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honour of Ollie’s memory to a charity of your choice or to the Winnipeg Grace Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Drive, Winnipeg, MB, R3J 3M7.
