These are a few words about my mother, Pauline (Loyck) Marceniuk. Pauline was born in Ituna, Saskatchewan, in 1927. She was 1 of 7 children born to John and Annie Loyck. She worked as a waitress in the restaurant of the Bell Hotel, where she met her husband, John Marceniuk. John was fresh out of the army, and he and his friend Peter Slobodian went to have lunch at the Bell Hotel. Pauline came to their table to serve them. After she took their order, he invited her to join him for an ice cream cone and a walk after work. That’s all it took to fall head over heels in love with Pauline. They were married in 1946 in Winnipeg. They started their lives with meagre resources. It was a long, hard road, but eventually Pauline became a hairdresser and opened a shop on St. Mary’s Road called ‘The Powder Puff Beauty Salon’. The building was large, so they lived in the biggest part of it and had the salon in the smaller part. Daughter Sherri was born there. Later, that building became St. Vital Florists. They bought a house on Hindley Avenue, where they were close to the Marceniuk families. They enjoyed being close to their brothers, their wives, and their children. Sherri had a chance to be close to extended family as well. They lived there for a few years, then rented it out when they moved to East Kildonan, where they lived in a few homes. Their son Daryl was born on Eade Crescent. Their final place of residence was on Valhalla Drive. Pauline’s joys were first of all hairdressing, then gardening, floral and home design, cooking and sewing. Whatever Mom put her mind to, she did it 100% to her ability. She will be deeply missed by her daughter Sherri and sister Olga, who provided invaluable support at the end; brothers Bill and Walter and grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and the list goes on. Mom and Dad seemed opposites, but they complemented one another. Together they stood firm and strong. Dad used to say, "Pauline was not a cog in the wheel; she was the wheel." Sleep well, Mom. Love, Sherri
