SHIRLEY ANN NICOL
It is with great sadness that we announce that Shirley Ann Nicol, peacefully passed away February 25,2022.
Shirley was born June 4,1938 in Brandon, Manitoba, pre-deceased by her parents, William James and Thelma Blanche Nicol and her sister Wilma and brother Jim.
Shirley was a loving Aunt to many nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces. She took pride and joy watching them grow up, raise their own children and becoming the families and individuals they are today.
She was blessed with a great wealth of many wonderful and caring friends, (too many to list) and Shirley always referred to them as an extension of her own family. Her family would like to thank each and every one of them who came into her life and touched her heart in their own special way.
As a young adult Shirley made her move and planted her roots in Winnipeg, Manitoba, settling in a small apartment on Corydon Avenue, which quickly became a beacon for her family and friends.
Many Christmases were spent there squished around a small kitchen table, and even with the lack of space the was never a shortage of Love and Laughter. Shirley eventually moved to 400 Stradbrook avenue where she spent her remaining years. She loved her time as a volunteer with the Stradbrook Tenants Association Executive Committee, as treasurer, helping organize special events such as birthdays, anniversaries, teas, special occasion dinners, movie nights, bingos, cards…etc. Shirley with the help of her sister, Wilma became the weekend caretakers of the block, and her favourite job was cleaning out the drink machine and counting all the coins. She planted deep roots in the Osborne Village community and her two favourite spots were her church, Crescent Fort Rouge United, and Baked Expectations.
Shirley was a proud member of Crescent Fort Rouge United Church. Never short of giving of her time by volunteering, she spent many hours helping organize church special events such as church teas, special lunches and suppers, garage sales, etc. She loved her time volunteering in the church office, but Sunday Worship was her favourite day, worshiping the Lord and spending time with her friends and families of the congregation.
Shirley met a group of very special women at the church, the “Circle One Ladies”. She spoke often of them and was proud to be member of this special group of women. Her love for God was strong and profound. Shirley believed in angels, and always said that they were a gift sent by God in time of need.
Following in her mother’s footsteps, Shirley took over as the Family Historian. She was happiest spending time with each family member flipping through countless pages of old & new photo albums and reminiscing about the stories behind each photo in hopes of one day the memories and history will be passed on to the next generation.
When asked of the seven nephews and nieces (Vern, Dee, Shari, Will, Corey, Grant and Ryan) what one word best described aunt/auntie Shirley, even the seven words could not fully embody the person Shirley Ann Nicol – Shirley was always tolerant and accepting of others, never speaking poorly of anyone. Her compassion for others was undeniable, always giving of herself. She embodied the word empathy, never giving less or more to any one person or cause. She believed that there was good in all. But mostly aunt/auntie Shirley was the kindest warm hearted, loving person to all her family, friends, and any others that were blessed to cross her path. Love and kindness radiated from her soul.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation to Alpha House or Agape Table in memory of Shirley.
She will be sadly missed and always remembered.
