STANLEY PERKS
July 15, 2012
STANLEY ALBION PERKS On Sunday, July 15, 2012 Stan embarked on a new adventure. He passed away peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital, from a very aggressive form of liver cancer. Stan was born in England on August 30, 1922. He served with the British Royal Artillery in the Second World War, and also in the Korean War. He worked in telecommunications at the British Post Office. As a young man, Stan enjoyed speed-skating and cycling. One day, he phoned the operator to get a number for a speed-skating rink. He liked the sound of the operator’s voice, and phoned her back and invited her to come and watch him speed-skate. She agreed and they began dating. He married her (Thelma Hall) on June 21, 1947. One of Stan’s greatest adventures occurred in 1961, when he and Thelma emigrated to Canada with their two children. They settled in New Liskeard, Ontario, where he worked at Northern Telephone. Stan was Commanding Officer of Air Cadet 536 Squadron for several years. In 1974, he and Thelma went on another adventure, moving to Fergus, Ontario, where he continued to work in telecommunications. And in 1984, they moved to Milton, Ontario. In 2003, at the age of 80, Stan moved to Winnipeg to be closer to his daughter and to his wife, who was now in a nursing home in Winnipeg. During the next few years, he volunteered at Vista Park Lodge, CASARA (Civil Air Search and Rescue Association), and at the Western Canada Aviation Museum. He enjoyed traveling, and greatly enjoyed his yearly trips to Australia. Stan leaves behind his son David of Ottawa; and daughter Susan (Paul) Ash of Winnipeg. Also left behind are his brother Geoff (Dot) of Australia; sister Aileen Banks of Jersey, Channel Islands, and their families; brother-in-law Dennis (Pat) Hall of Greensville, Ontario, and his family; as well he will be missed by many, including close friends Suzanne Eckler of Huntsville, Ontario, Haleem Khan of Burlington, Ontario, and Marie and Denis Bonneteau of Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his wife Thelma in 2004, and by his sister Joyce Sturgeon of England. In compliance with Stan’s wishes there will be no Funeral Service. Donations in Dad’s honour may be made to the Western Canada Aviation Museum, 958 Ferry Road, Winnipeg, MB R3H 0Y8. In his final days, Stan made his peace with God, accepting that: There is a God-sized hole in every human heart that only God can fillPublish Date: Jul 18, 2012STANLEY ALBION PERKS On Sunday, July 15, 2012 Stan embarked on a new adventure.
