STEPHANIE BERLIN

June 26, 2012

STEPHANIE (SALLY) BERLIN (nee PINKOS) We sadly announce the passing of our mother, Stephanie Berlin on June 26, 2012 at the Beausejour Hospital at the age of 94 years. Remaining to cherish Stephanie’s memory are her daughter, Vivian (Armand) Paquette of Beausejour; son Donald Zornick of St. Andrews; sisters, Olga (John) Haligowsk of Winnipeg, Margaret (Robert) Myron of Thunder Bay; brother Eddie Pinkus of Vancouver; four grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Nicolas and Taciana Pinkos; brothers, Roman, Mike, Walter and Billy; and daughter-in-law Lorraine Zornick. Mom was born March 9, 1918 in Chatfield, Manitoba to Nicolas and Taciana Pinkos, who had recently immigrated from Poland and the Ukraine. The family later moved to Winnipeg where she and her brothers and sisters grew up. Although a clever student, she left school at a young age to help her mother run the household and raise the younger children. She began working for Parkhill Bedding during the Second World War, taking a male laborer’s job upholstering furniture. After she left the factory, the manager boasted of her abilities for years saying Sally could do the work of two men . In 1948, she met and married Buster Berlin. They teamed up to create and operate Market Sales Sporting Goods of Winnipeg. They made their home in West Kildonan where together they raised their two children, Vivian and Donald. For the rest of her years, Sally enjoyed spending time with family, cooking, fishing and tending her vegetable garden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 200 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. Rest In Peace, Mom, We Love You   As published in the Winnipeg Free Press on June 30, 2012
