THOMAS MUNRO
On Sunday, April 2, 2017, Dad passed away at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 87 years, with his loving family at his bedside. Thomas was predeceased by his wife Edith, and is survived by his children: Joan (Barry); Neil and grandchildren Katelyn and Scott; Linda (Chris). He will also be dearly missed by Pat, his partner of 25 years whose devotion and care added to the quality of Dad’s life immensely and will never be forgotten; Pat’s children, Marcia (Colleen), Rob (Pam), and Tim (Mary) and their children. Dad is also fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews in Scotland, Bahamas and the U.S. Dad was born in Castlehill Barracks, Aberdeen, Scotland on September 15, 1929 to the late Pipe Major Hugh and Mary Jane Munro. He was the last surviving sibling of their family of five sons and four daughters. As newlyweds, Dad and Mom immigrated to Canada and arrived in Winnipeg in April, 1956. They raised their family in the Fort Garry/Fort Rouge neighbourhoods. As a young man, Dad served 12 years with the British army including three years in the Seaforth Highlanders as a scout with the Gurkha Brigade in Malaysia and with the Middle East Land Forces in a number of countries. After settling in Canada, Dad continued his military service with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders for 14 years. Dad was a tireless volunteer on behalf of veterans and youth sports programs and spent many years as an executive member of the Rockwood A.N.A.F. # 303, serving six terms as President. Over the years, he received many volunteer and service awards and was recognized in 2012 with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. One of Dad’s legacies is the ANAVETS Cup awarded annually to the champion team of the Winnipeg High School Football League. Dad had a great love for northern Canada, gardening and the outdoors. He was a sports enthusiast and an avid reader. His greatest passion was the game of soccer. He had so many great memories of his involvement as a founding member of the Fort Rouge Soccer Club and promoting soccer in Winnipeg. A celebration of Dad’s life will be held on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in Rockwood A.N.A.F. # 303, 341 Wilton Street, Winnipeg. Thank you to all the loyal friends at the club whose support and visits meant so much to Dad and Pat. Thank you to the doctors and nursing staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their excellent care during Dad’s surgeries and hospital stays. Dad wanted to especially acknowledge home caregivers, Abdul and John for their care and friendship. In lieu of flowers, the family greatly appreciates donations to the Matthew Hower Foundation, 133 Aldershot Boulevard, Winnipeg, MB R3P 0E2 or a charity of your choice.
