Valerie Anne Vanstone
Valerie Anne Vanstone, aged 73, passed away on February 9, 2025, in Winnipeg.
She will be missed by her siblings and their partners: Dianne, Ellen, Jay and Kaneena, Michael and Casey, and Lindsay, and by her nieces and nephews, Ruth, Eliza, Alec, Miles, Jakab, Clare, Leo and Rena. Valerie grew up in Winnipeg and studied French and comparative literature at universities in Manitoba and Sherbrooke, Quebec.
Her career included teaching at a lycée in Rennes, France, and freelancing as a French-English translator in Toronto and Montreal. She eventually retired to the town of Gimli on Lake Winnipeg for several years before returning to her hometown for good. It is a testament to Valerie’s kind and generous nature that so many of her friends — from Winnipeg to Gimli, Toronto, Montreal and France — either visited Valerie during her illness or sent loving messages and tributes to her.
Among her many gifts, Valerie had a true appreciation of beauty, and her own creativity showed up in the many thoughtful cards and presents she regularly bestowed on all of us, be it for a special occasion, or for no reason at all.
Valerie’s family sends their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Grace Hospital, CancerCare Manitoba and 4E Family Medicine at St. Boniface Hospital for their kindness and care.
A memorial service will be held for friends and family in the spring.
