Growing up in Ashern, during the end of the depression and the start of the war, times were tough, and money was scarce, but he enjoyed his time there and had many fond memories. Bill held many jobs during his life, including working as a roughneck on a gas rig in Alberta, he served a reservist (rank of Sergeant) with the Winnipeg Grenadiers. He worked as a delivery driver, a CN rail conductor, commercial painter (Fort Rouge Decorating and Sandblasting CO) a cab driver, a home heating oil truck driver, a semi-truck driver (Royal Mail) a billboard sign installer and lastly, owner and operator of a city-wide delivery service for over 30 stores which included Cantin Drugs and Zipurskies meats.
Dad loved sports, playing cards and any kind of game. He was a very good curler, golfer and bowler. He organized many sporting events in Charleswood, and his name is still displayed on trophies at the curling club. At the lake it was horseshoes and cards and regardless of your age he was out to win! Dad was very competitive!
His pride and joy was his cottage at the lake in St Laurent MB. Dad, Marie and the family spend many years building, repairing and updating the cottage, until it finally became his retirement home. He spent the majority of his time fixing, painting and improving the cottage. He also enjoyed growing tomatoes and potatoes along with “puttering “at different jobs around the property. He lived life on his own terms.
Dad decided to move into the city in 2019, and after he became seriously ill, he moved to the Poseidon care home just before the pandemic. At one point he remained in his room in isolation for more than 45 days. His last years were spent outside as much as possible (in all types of weather) feeding the birds, squirrels and pigeons. He even managed to grow tomatoes outside in the courtyard. Dad was very popular at Poseidon, and the family would like to thank the staff for looking after him.
When the weather warms up, we plan on doing two small celebrations of Dads life. One will be at Brookside Cemetery in Winnipeg and the other will take place at the cottage at St Laurent. We will try to get the date out to everyone so that they can attend.
Celebration of Life will take place at The Royal Canadian Legion, 6003 Roblin Boulevard on Friday, June 30, 2023 at 12:30 p.m.
